Despite capturing Set 1, the Missouri Southern State University volleyball team could not tame the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm and fell 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 16-25) in their season opener Thursday at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
"To see our offense running on all cylinders early in Set 1 was great. We love that. In two, three and four, I just felt like we got outworked a little bit defensively — and the girls agreed with that," MSSU head coach Joshua Moore said. "I think it was a good lesson that nothing that happens this season is just going to be given to us. We are going to have to earn everything we get. Overall, that team outworked us, so we are just going to have to take it on the chin."
The match was the first of 12 for the six teams in the three-day 2026 Southern Invite.
In Set 1, Southern jumped out to a 4-0 lead in a run that included kills by Addysen Alvis and Grace Gardner and a Brenna Weaver service ace.
The Lions led by as many as 5 points twice in the set — at 10-5 and 11-6, but the Storm battled back to 20-22 off a setting error. Southern later closed out the 25-21 win with a Kaelyn Kendrick kill.
