The Florida State Seminoles held their first scrimmage of fall camp on Tuesday night in Doak Campbell Stadium as they prepare for the New Mexico State Aggies and the 2026 season. While Mike Norvell was pleased with starter Ashton Daniels, it was not all good news in the quarterback room.
Norvell revealed that Malachi Marshall is dealing with a "slight injury" and did not play, according to Liam Rooney of the Tallahassee Democrat. Norvell did not seem to think it was a major injury, saying he hopes he will be available for their second scrimmage on Sunday.
Marshall, who recently joined the team, is competeting with Kevin Sperry to be FSU's primary backup behind Daniels. A JUCO product, he is coming off an excellent season at Iowa Western C.C., leading them to a national championship and a 12-1 record. He was named the JUCO Offensive Player of the Year after he completed 63% of his passes for 2,750 yards, 33 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
While he has a great ability to throw the football, he has plenty of catching up to do after missing out on spring practice. At 168 pounds, he also needs to keep adding weight to survive the grind of a season.
Sperry was able to show what he can do in the scrimmage, hitting freshman wide receiver Jasen Lopez for a big gain, Norvell said, before adding that there were some things to "continue to work on" when addressing Sperry. He played in three games for FSU last season, completing 12 of his 17 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns.
