Samantha Morton recently revealed she hasn't worked for a year since filming Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Morton played Circe, a witch and goddess on the island of Aeaea, in the epic film. She spoke about her career challenges on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
"I haven't worked for a year since making The Odyssey," Morton said on the podcast. She noted that she has "really good agents and a manager." However, she acknowledged the shifting landscape of the entertainment industry. "But at the end of the day, I'm 49. I do believe I'm a good actor, [but] there are other good actors out there," she continued. She added, "The politics of the industry has changed massively."
Morton also discussed being replaced in Spike Jonze's 2013 film Her. She originally read lines on set opposite Joaquin Phoenix for the voice **** istant character Samantha. Scarlett Johansson's voice ultimately replaced Morton's performance in post-production.
"I think my version of Samantha was very… she's English," Morton explained. She praised her replacement, saying, "Scarlett Johansson has a beautiful voice. She's incredibly evocative." Morton admitted the experience was painful despite her gracious response. "It does hurt when you're fired from something," she said. She also wished for "another chance in a booth to do an American accent."
