With Penn State beginning training camp Wednesday, here are five storylines to follow leading up to the first game of the Matt Campbell era Sept. 5 against Marshall at Beaver Stadium:
1. How will all the jigsaw pieces fit on the field?
Campbell has been talking about the importance of team unity since his arrival. He has ******* embled a team with about 50 Penn State returners and 40 transfers from 18 schools, including 24 from Iowa State, Campbell's previous institution.
By all accounts, the players began meshing during winter workouts and continued to bond during spring practice and the summer. But because so many front-line players missed all or part of spring practice and because many of these guys have never played in games together, it's natural to wonder how all the pieces will fit once the games start.
"There's certainly some unknown," Campbell said at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago. "Probably a little bit of our good fortune is that we have such a good history with the (former Iowa State) players that missed a good portion of the spring. I think the Penn State (returning) players that missed a portion of the spring have earned videotape evidence of what they can do.
