The Toronto Maple Leafs' previous salary cap struggles have once again fueled debate years after the NHL's COVID-19 financial shutdown. This time, NHL **** yst Matthew Cauz argued that timing, rather than poor planning alone, played a major role in limiting Toronto's championship window.
Speaking on TSN's First Up podcast, Cauz pointed to the contract extensions signed by William Nylander, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner before the pandemic.
"William Nylander signed his six-year extension on December 1, 2018. Auston Matthews signed a five-year extension on February 5, 2019. Mitch Marner signed a six-year extension on September 13, 2019," Cauz said.
He added, "A year later, COVID hits. And what happens? The cap stops."
