Fresh off scoring a career-high 31 points on 12 for 15 shooting in Minnesota’s win Wednesday night in Los Angeles, a reporter asked Lynx rookie guard Olivia Miles where her “funk” originated.
“Funk?” A quizzical Miles responded. “What you mean by that?”
Swagger, confidence, fearlessness – all traits Miles demonstrates on the floor on a nightly basis in Year 1 of her professional career.
“I don’t know. I’m from Jersey. We have a Jersey swag. That New York-style hoop,” Miles said. “I feel like I got my swagger from there, and then my teammates allow me to kind of be me out there.”
The latter is pivotal. Minnesota is flush with veterans. Miles is joined in the starting lineup by four players who are 31-plus years old. That’s not an easy situation for anyone to walk into, let alone the point guard. Back in training camp, the rookie noted how odd it was to be directing her far more experienced teammates.
