Sep. 5—SEATTLE — Heading into Sunday's Apple Cup, Washington State and coach Kirby Moore have said all the right things, have talked about all the right game plans.
The Cougars want to keep Husky quarterback Demond Williams contained in the pocket. Their defense wants to generate pressure on him and disrupt his rhythm. While Washington State's offense wants QB Caden Pinnick to make the correct reads before the snap, and to diagnose the Huskies' defensive schemes.
The Cougars have all the right things in mind. But as Moore said about containing Williams: "It's way easier said than done."
For that reason, we're picking Washington to win the 118th Apple Cup No. 118 in relatively comfortable fashion, dispatching an upstart WSU club with a first-year head coach in Moore. The Huskies are just too talented, too deep, and too savvy to lose an Apple Cup at Husky Stadium for the first time since 2021.
For WSU, one of the bigger challenges will involve running the ball against UW's defense, which is one way the Cougars could ease Pinnick into the game. The only problem for WSU is that many of the offensive linemen at the center of the operation, like center Noah Dunham and guards Kyle Martin and Nick Bakken, will be playing some of their first snaps of college football.

Byrd senior running back Christian Maxie set a pair of school records, and a city record, despite his Jackets falling 44-37 to defending LHSAA Non-Select Division I Ouachita Parish in Monroe on the opening night of Louisiana high school football.
Maxie, who continues moving closer to becoming the school's all-time rushing leader, rushed 40 times for 429 yards — both school records. The yards also set a Shreveport city record. The speedster scored three times and averaged 10.7 yards per carry in the contest.
Byrd (0-1) led for most of the first half behind the play of Maxie and quarterback Leo Ezernack, but the hosts built a 15-point fourth-quarter cushion and held on as Byrd scored with just over a minute remaining. The ensuing onside kick was reeled in by the Lions (1-0).
Calvary 48, Huntington 22: The Cavaliers (1-0) opened their 2026 campaign with a dominant win against Huntington (0-1) in the first game of the Stars and Stripes Border Classic, sponsored by the City of Shreveport. The event will conclude Friday with Parkway playing Dunham at 5 p.m. and Evangel testing West Monroe at 8 p.m. at Independence Stadium.

Travis Kelce has shared details about his "magical" wedding to Taylor Swift.
The American football player opened up about their nuptials on the latest New Heights podcast episode, released on Wednesday.
Flashing a glimpse of his new gold wedding ring, Travis told his brother Jason Kelce, "At this point, we're what, over a month out? It's been so much fun. I wish it could've lasted even longer than it did; it felt like it just happened in the blink of an eye."
It's been nearly two months since he and the Shake It Off singer tied the knot at Madison Square Garden on 3 July. The ceremony, officiated by Adam Sandler, saw the pop star and Kansas City Chiefs player say I do in front of 1,000 guests.
"It's a night out we'll never forget," Travis continued. "Me and Taylor are so thankful for everybody that showed up, from the vows to just seeing everyone, to how much fun we had, throughout the entire evening and hearing that kind of be relayed through everybody's stories of the night. And it was just so magical, man."
The star-studded guest list included Brad Pitt, Paul McCartney, Lena Dunham, Ed Sheeran, the Haim sisters, Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper, Hugh Grant, Dakota Johnson, and Sabrina Carpenter, among many more famous names.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift wanted their wedding to be "intimate and genuine," Kelce said on the first episode of his New Heights podcast since the July 3 ceremony. Naturally, they went with the most famous arena in the world. Madison Square Garden perplexed some spectators as a venue choice, but it made perfect sense to Kelce and Swift. "We needed it to be a private feel and MSG went above and beyond to give us that," Kelce said.
The athlete didn't spill too many details about what happened in the room, which was populated by guests including Brad Pitt, Paul McCartney, Conan O'Brien, Gigi Hadid, Lena Dunham, Zoë Kravitz, and more. Sept 1 (Reuters) - Scientists have made a possible breakthrough in the hunt for dark matter — observing hints of it during an experiment about a mile (1.6 km) underground in South Dakota — though they stopped short of saying they have finally detected this elusive cosmic component.
The researchers described a particle interaction documented at the Sanford Underground Research Facility — built in a former gold mine in the state's Black Hills region — that may have involved a hypothesized particle called a WIMP, short for "weakly interacting massive particle." This is one of the proposed candidates for being a dark matter particle.
Ordinary matter makes up stars, planets, people and everything else we can see. But it represents only about 15% of all the matter in the universe. The rest is thought to be dark matter, which does not emit or reflect light, making it invisible to the human eye and to telescopes. But scientists are confident dark matter exists because of its gravitational effects at galactic scales.
Particle physicist Sam Eriksen of the University of Bristol in England, lead author of a study describing the work, said it "could be the first hint of a dark matter observation."

Elite high school football players have spent years fighting up the depth chart, getting collegiate notice and becoming stars. With the start of the 2026 football season approaching, its time for the upperclassmen in 2027 and 2028 to shine, and the underclassmen to begin making their names known.
USA TODAY Sports is proud to present its preseason All-America team, highlighting 36 players on both sides of the ball who are primed to become household names now and in the future. Champions like David Gabriel-Georges, record-breakers like Roye Oliver III, and showstoppers like Jalen Brewster represent a loaded field that destined for highlight reels and national recognition.
These three teams were dictated based off a variety of factors, including performances in previous seasons, statistics, recruiting rankings and projections for how they will grow in the coming year. It's a profile of who to watch closely — they may be repping your favorite teams on Saturdays and Sundays in the near future.
Without further ado, here is the USA TODAY Sports All-America National Preseason Team.

Jul. 30—Editor's note: This is the second in a series of stories that will run each day previewing Washington State's preseason camp before it begins on Aug. 6. This edition covers the Cougars' offensive line.
PULLMAN — Flip back to last fall and check out a few of Washington State's more forgettable losses. You'll find setbacks to North Texas, to Oregon State, to James Madison. The first of those is an exception, but you can draw a through-line through the final two.
The Cougars couldn't sustain any offense.
Which is why as head coach Kirby Moore takes over, WSU is likely prioritizing production from its offensive line more than ever. Last season, the Cougars finished nine spots up from dead last in Pro Football Focus' pass-blocking grades, then just three spots up from last in run-blocking grades. Injuries besieged a front five that was already shaky at times, and while the Cougs made it work and won a bowl game for the first time in seven years, they could have engineered an even more memorable season with more consistent offensive line play.
That brings us to WSU's current offensive line, which at first glance has the tools to improve on that trend. Headed into next week's fall camp opener, this group will likely take first-team reps, at least to start camp: Left tackle Ashton Tripp, left guard Jonny Lester, center Kyle Martin, right guard Noah Dunham, right tackle Maximus McCree. By the end of WSU's spring practices in April, that's the group that had risen to the top.

Comedy was clearly at the forefront of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's star-studded wedding on Friday.
The Madison Square Garden ceremony was officiated by Adam Sandler and included a dinner speech from Girls creator Lena Dunham that had attendees "gasping."
Dunham, 40, and Swift, 36, have been close friends since the early 2010s when Dunham was dating Swift's musical collaborator Jack Antonoff. Swift later served as a bridesmaid at Dunham's wedding to musician Luis Felber in 2021.

The risqué gag drew "gasps and laughs" from guests, according to a Daily Mail insider, who added that Swift immediately declared Dunham a "genius" after her speech.

In the months leading up to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's nuptials, the internet was buzzing with questions: Where would they have it? Would the ceremony be big or small? And most importantly, who would snag an invite?
Well, it's safe to say that the wedding was an extravagant event in midtown Manhattan — and the guest list was filled to the brim with friends, family and fellow celebrities.
Among the first celebrity guests spotted arriving at the rehearsal dinner Thursday evening were Swift's longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff and his sister, fashion designer Rachel Antonoff, according to People. Actress Lena Dunham was also photographed heading into the arena, along with model Gigi Hadid and actor Bradley Cooper, who arrived together in an SUV.
Selena Gomez shared an Instagram video of herself in the back of a car wearing a black lace gown, seemingly en route to the dinner. Swift's childhood best friend Abigail Anderson was spotted arriving in a golden gown, along with Swift's longtime publicist Tree Paine and close friend Ashley Avignone. Sports broadcasters Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson were also photographed at the venue, as was San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle.
The New York Times suggested that a multiday event would take place at Madison Square Garden after confirming that Swift had rented it out. Per the outlet, Swift and Kelce planned to host an intimate gathering of about 100 guests on July 2, while their larger, glitzier celebration with 1,000 rumored guests and possible stage performances would take place on July 3. Swift and Kelce also reportedly filed a permit with New York City to close the streets around the arena from July 2-4.

WASHINGTON, June 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to wrap up its current term in the coming days, with several major cases yet to be decided, including three involving Donald Trump's far-reaching ******* ertion of presidential powers, two important election-related cases and one involving a crackdown by states on transgender athletes.
The court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, has seven disputes still to be resolved, and has set Monday as its next day to issue rulings. Supreme Court terms begin in October and typically wrap up around the end of June, sometimes spilling over into early July.
The Trump cases center on his moves last year to fire a member of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board of Governors and a member of the Federal Trade Commission, and his executive order last year to limit birthright citizenship — three actions that test the boundaries of presidential powers.
The court gave the Republican president victories in two immigration-related cases on Thursday, and has backed him in multiple emergency rulings since he returned to office last year, allowing policies impeded by lower courts to take effect while legal challenges proceeded. The court, however, handed him a significant loss in February when it rejected his sweeping tariffs issued under a law meant for use in national emergencies.

WASHINGTON, March 18 (Reuters) - Using ground-penetrating radar, NASA's Perseverance rover has detected underground remains of an ancient river delta on Mars in some of the oldest evidence yet obtained showing how water once flowed on the surface of Earth's planetary neighbor.
Researchers said the six-wheeled rover revealed geological features up to 115 feet (35 meters) underground while traversing 3.8 miles (6.1 km) of terrain inside Jezero Crater, an area in the Martian northern hemisphere believed
