Comedian Bill Maher called Democratic politicians "cowards" while doubling down on his stance that the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers were not — a position that infamously led to ABC canceling his show more than two decades ago.
In a segment on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" Friday, the comedian reaffirmed his opinion that "the terrorists weren't cowards" which he initially said after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"I know a guy whose show got canceled just for saying the terrorists weren't cowards. And that guy was right. They weren't cowards, but I'll tell you who is: Democratic Party politicians," Maher said.
He added that this "moral confusion" within the party is most notable when talking about "a place called Gaza."
"A little strip of land that was not part of the original Israel, but which they won in a war launched against them, but then gave back as a peace gesture," he said.

This article contains details, including depictions of violence, which some readers may find distressing.
Without the interventions of her family and friends, Amy says she would have married the man who had physically and psychologically abused her for much of their relationship.
Had the wedding gone ahead, she fears he would have eventually killed her.
Christopher Malcolm, a serial rapist who was recently jailed for his crimes, inflicted life-changing injuries on his former fiancée - on one occasion she said he left her face "black and blue" just before she visited her terminally ill father for Father's Day.
Amy, not her real name, told the BBC that staying in the relationship was often a means to calm the violence and survive. So long as Malcolm was free, she said she did not feel safe enough to report him to police.

BATAM, Indonesia (AP) — The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln sailed past Singapore early on Sunday as it headed home after a grueling deployment in the Middle East. It's expected to stop in Thailand for a port visit.
Associated Press journalists on the Indonesian island of Batam, across the Singapore Strait, spotted the massive vessel as it transited waters near Singapore just after 1 a.m. local time.
The Lincoln, one of the U.S. Navy's largest warships, was supporting the U.S. war against Iran. Its deployment included a record-setting uninterrupted time at sea of more than 250 days. Concerns have grown about the Lincoln's lengthy deployment following reports of deteriorating mental health among the crew and shortages of supplies including food and hygiene products.
Thai officials have said the Lincoln will stop in Thailand for rest and recovery before returning to its U.S. base.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has apologised to a man who remained in prison despite charges against him being dropped.
James Jobson, 62, from Costessey near Norwich, had been accused of sharing details of properties housing asylum seekers and remanded in custody following anti-immigration disorder in Thetford, but Norfolk Police said on Friday that no further action would be taken.
The CPS also confirmed that the charges were dropped against Jobson on Friday, but he was not released from prison until the following day with his family telling the BBC they were "in bits".
A CPS spokesperson said it had been alerted on Saturday to an "inaccuracy in the notice sent to the prison".
"We would like to apologise to James Jobson and his family," they said.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The U.S. military launched airstrikes Sunday targeting Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard to retaliate for the killing of American troops in Jordan, further widening crossfire between the nations as an interim deal seeking an end to their war has collapsed.
The strikes are part of a weeklong campaign that began with a struggle over control of the Strait of Hormuz and has seen Iran strike U.S.-allied countries across the Middle East.
The U.S. has targeted bridges, electrical facilities and other targets in Iran, and Tehran has retaliated by hitting power and desalination plants in Kuwait, threatening daily life in that small, oil-rich desert nation. Iran also has stepped up its threats to further expand the strikes, drawing a warning overnight from the United Arab Emirates.
Kuwait and Bahrain again activated air defenses Sunday morning as they warned of incoming Iranian drones and missiles.
The U.S. military's Central Command in its statement also said it hit "Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, maritime capabilities and missile and drone storage sites." It also said for the first time it specifically targeting the Guard, a key power base in Iran's theocracy that controls its ballistic missile **** nal.
