Phillies news: Pitcher headed for intriguing role after injury return appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Philadelphia Phillies are preparing for another postseason push. Their starting pitching is set to lead the way, but the Phillies do have some overall uncertainty on the roster. One pitcher who could make an impact in a specific role once he returns from injury is Tanner Banks. According to MLB.com, Banks, who is recovering from a left forearm strain, is being built up for a long man role in the bullpen.
While most relievers pitch one inning in games, Banks could give the Phillies multiple innings in this role. He would likely be expected to throw anywhere from two to four innings depending on the situation of the game. For example, if a starter struggles and exits the game in the third inning, Banks could potentially save the bullpen and pitch into the sixth inning.
So, why is this role so important? After all, it isn't exactly the closer or setup man role in the bullpen. Well, starting pitchers do not always pitch especially late into games this late in the season. Managers are much more likely to turn to the bullpen earlier in games during the postseason.
