The Vikings quarterback battle did not even make it to the first preseason game. After weeks of build-up, OTAs, and training camp practices, we have now arrived at a decision on the starter by head coach Kevin O'Connell.
The Minnesota Vikings named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback for the start of the regular season back on August 11. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news of the decision, and ever since then, the noise around the position has not gotten any quieter for the Vikings.
One thing that folks are doing is projecting out what could happen. ESPN's Kevin Seifert did a fun look at the most likely and least likely outcomes related to Murray. For the least likely outcome. Seifert hinted that injury is going to be their biggest issue that could somehow present a unique opportunity.
He wrote, "Murray gets hurt and/or struggles. McCarthy steps in to replace him, and a light goes on. McCarthy plays the way the Vikings hoped he would when they drafted him, and Minnesota picks up his fifth-year option and confidently anoints him the starter for 2027."
That outcome seems beyond unlikely based on what everyone has seen from McCarthy. If this were the case, one would have to imagine that they draft a quarterback to compete with McCarthy.
