OXFORD — There were four key components to the perfect Pete Golding impression in the Southern Miss football team room.
The 2014 and 2015 Golden Eagles held an annual talent show. All the new players had to get up in front of everyone and entertain their teammates. It was invariable someone would impersonate Golding, who was then a defensive backs coach for the Golden Eagles.
According to former USM cornerback Xavier Marion, the must-haves for a hilarious performance were a mix of props and mannerisms.
Wad up something to put in your mouth. The more it looked like a dip, the better. Hold a cup in one hand to add to the realism. Wear a hat.
And, finally, get a player in the audience to ask you a football question. End your explanation with a drawn out, rhetorical "riiiiiight?" that is still Golding's signature phrase 11 years later in press conferences as the Ole Miss coach.
