Pope Leo XIV was famously in the stands at the 2005 World Series, back when the Chicago White Sox were a team that won things. He's kept the faith since, which for a Sox fan is saying something.
The Dolton native turned first American-born pope got his tribute Tuesday night when the White Sox hosted the Cincinnati Reds. There were over 40,000 pope hats, enough for the fans and even players, handed out before the game. There was even a special one made for the White Sox mascot South Paw. The pointed mitre in black and green with a Sox logo on it were such a popular idea they had to expand it. Initially it was a typical "first 1,500 fans," but ticket sales tripled withing a day of the announcement.
