CHICAGO — When Brett Harris connected for a grand slam in the Worcester Red Sox' doubleheader at Polar Park Wednesday, it was already a good day.
Then, shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday night, it got better: Harris got word from Worcester interim manager Iggy Suarez that he was being called up by the Red Sox, with instructions to take the first flight out to Chicago Thursday morning.
Even better, when Harris arrived at Rate Field Thursday, he found his name on the lineup card, playing first base in the series finale against the White Sox. Willson Contreras was held out of the lineup, still bothered by a sore left foot, the result of being struck by a foul ball Wednesday night.
Harris took the roster spot made available when Ranger Suarez (groin) was placed on the IL Thursday morning, retroactive to July 6.
"It's good to be here," said Harris, who was acquired by the Red Sox from the Athletics last week. "It kind of happened pretty quickly."
