One of the greatest pitchers of his generation is calling it a career.
Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander announced Tuesday that the 2026 season will be his last, bringing an end to a remarkable Major League Baseball career that has spanned more than two decades and cemented his place among the sport’s all-time greats.
Verlander shared the news in a heartfelt statement, thanking the Commissioner of Baseball for selecting him to the 2026 All-Star Game before revealing that he has decided this will be his final season.
“This season has challenged me in ways I haven’t experienced before, both physically and mentally,” Verlander wrote. “Over the last several months, I’ve realized that time has come.”
Verlander’s decision carries added significance because he is finishing where it all began.
