El Niño has formed in the Pacific Ocean and is expected to intensify in the coming months, meteorologists say.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Friday that El Niño conditions have developed in the tropical Pacific and could "strengthen rapidly".
"El Niño conditions are already underway and are forecast to strengthen rapidly into a strong event, as accurately anticipated by WMO forecasts," said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo. "This will intensify the chances of drought and heavy rainfall and the risk of heatwaves on land and marine heatwaves in many regions of the world."
It said latest data indicated a "rapid development" into a strong El Niño event during July–September 2026
Last month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officially confirmed the arrival of El Niño, a prolonged period of warming sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, which affects weather patterns across the globe.
