(NewsNation) — Millions of women are using GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight during menopause, but a bone health expert says the combination could set women up for fractures down the road.
Wendy Kohrt, a bone health researcher at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine, says menopause and GLP-1 weight loss trends are colliding to create "a perfect storm" for women's skeletons.
"Postmenopausal women are already at a time of life when they're losing bone at an accelerated rate," she told UCHealth Today. "They are seeking a treatment with GLP-1 drugs that will likely accelerate bone loss even more."
