OpenAI is considering delaying its initial public offering until next year, amid concerns about AI stocks as well as ******* eX's retreat after its initial post-IPO surge.
The Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence startup announced on June 8 that it had confidentially filed its IPO plan with the SEC. That came a week after fellow AI startup giant Anthropic disclosed its own confidential IPO filing, and just days before the ******* eX (SPCX) IPO priced on June 11.
However, the ChatGPT creator is now leaning against going public this year, the New York Times reported late Thursday, citing three sources. IPO advisors reportedly are encouraging OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to wait, citing multiple reasons.
SpaceX raised more than $85 billion in its IPO, with an initial valuation of $1.77 trillion. SPCX surged initially, hitting 225.64 intraday on June 16. But shares have tumbled since then, closing Thursday at 153. That's still above the ******* eX IPO price of 135.
On a related note, AI chip startup Cerebras (CBRS) came public in May at $185 a share, surging to 386.34 in its May 14 debut but closing well off highs. CBRS stock then fell sharply over the next few weeks. On Wednesday, CBRS stock dived nearly 20% after the company forecast a big drop in gross margins. Shares fell another 7.5% on Thursday to 168.52, well below the IPO price.
