According to the latest Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances, 46% of Americans have no retirement savings, and 43% of working-age adults have no balance in a 401(k), IRA, or defined-benefit plan. That gap matters because it makes the typical balance a poor benchmark on its own.
