SAN MARINO (AP) — Pope Leo XIV used a visit to the tiny landlocked San Marino and a major Catholic gathering in the Italian city of Rimini on Saturday to issue one of his strongest appeals yet against war, polarization and social division, urging believers to foster dialogue and friendship in a fractured world.
Speaking to tens of thousands in Rimini, Leo warned against a culture that "rearms minds, words and nations" and argued that Christians must respond with mercy, encounter and a commitment to peace.
He also delivered a message of encouragement to young Catholics, telling them they are "a sign that the future is promising, and not a threat!"
Earlier, in San Marino, Leo addressed local authorities of the world's oldest surviving republic and reflected on the legacy of Saints Marino and Leone, whom he credited with helping create a society rooted in freedom, mutual respect and community.
The pope said the two saints translated the Christian message into "a new community and political model, strongly characterized by the Christian principles of freedom, mutual respect and communion" — a legacy that he said continues to shape the republic today.

Manchester City have confirmed the coaches that will join the club as part of Enzo Maresca's backroom team, with all having previously worked with the Italian.
Maresca signed a three-year contract to replace Pep Guardiola and compatriot Roberto Vitiello will become his new **** istant manager.
The 43-year-old started his career at Parma and played for Cesena, Vicenza, Rimini, Siena and at Palermo along with Maresca.
Willy Caballero joins as a first-team coach and returns to City, where he made 48 appearances as a goalkeeper and helped them win the 2013-14 League Cup with some penalty shootout heroics.
The Argentine is a former team-mate of Maresca from when they played for Malaga under ex-City boss Manuel Pellegrini.

Reports in Italy claim that Juventus and Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero is the frontman for a consortium hoping to purchase and revive Rimini, who declared bankruptcy and were later expelled from Serie C last year.
Rimini were docked 15 points last September due to 'various administrative irregularities', and the team was later disbanded and kicked out of Serie C as a result of the club's financial crisis.
Reports indicate that those in control of the club and its remaining **** ets are actively seeking buyers, and according to Saturday's updates from Calciomercato.com, there is a possibility that a consortium revolving around Del Piero takes control.

According to Saturday's reports, Del Piero will be joined by a 'mystery' business partner, who has invested in several of the former Juventus star's recent projects.
