The first night of high school football had some nail-biting action, with local teams playing some close games, as others were a bit more one-sided.
Conneaut got off to a good start with a 20-13 road win over Cuyahoga Heights.
"We went up 14-0 and it looked like we might [run away]," Conneaut coach Rocco Dobran said.
"We made way too many mistakes," he said of the issues that kept the game close.
Conneaut appears to be developing a balanced office, with multiple receivers and a strong running game led by Dobran's son, Wyant.

RICHFIELD — A backyard rivalry game in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park takes center stage in Week 1 of OHSAA high school football action.
Revere plays host Woodridge at Revere Stadium Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. The Minutemen finished 8-3 last season and reached the Division III playoffs, while Woodridge finished at 6-2. Revere won last year's Week 1 game 35-20 at Woodridge.

Much of Revere's returning strength will be on its lines. That group will be anchored by two-way linemen Jackson Farrow and Ryan Ferrara, both of whom are multi-year starters. Joel Caipen returns at defensive end where he finished with seven sacks in 2025. Michael Mark also returns at defensive end after 8½ tackles for loss last season. Revere will likely start Carter Hajdu at quarterback with twin brother Brady Hajdu likely to get the majority of carries at running back.

I never thought the day would come when Akron, Ohio, would be dumped from pro golf’s annual tournament calendar after 72 years of legendary moments at Firestone Country Club.
But I also never thought a cheating scandal could happen at the Soap Box Derby, or that gambling on sports would be legalized in Ohio in 2023, or that high school athletes could be paid through endorsements.
Akron's future in pro golf seemed secure. Longevity was on our side.

The first tournament came in 1953 to Breathnach Country Club in Cuyahoga Falls and then moved to Firestone Country Club the next year.
