A spokesperson for the Duke and **** ss of Sussex says they were surprised to see the Royal Household had sent out a letter clarifying the official status of Harry and Meghan as non-working royals.
The spokesperson said the pair "were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance."
But royal sources say Harry and Meghan were made aware of the letter before it was made public.
It is also understood a Home Office security committee is meeting today to look at the possibility of tax payer funded security for the family now they are living back in the UK.
The letter, sent on behalf of the King, was intended to clarify the status of Prince Harry and Meghan, who moved back from California with children Archie and Lilibet last month.

Comedian Bill Maher ripped Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) for his ongoing scrutiny of Anthony Fauci's time as White House chief medical adviser, arguing the senator strayed from his libertarian roots by releasing the former health official's diary and pushing to hold him in contempt of Congress.
"Stop threatening to put everyone in jail who you just don't like," Maher said Friday on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher."
"Rand babe, your entire brand is 'Senator Right to Privacy,'" he continued. "You're the libertarian guy, the Fourth Amendment guy."
Maher's comments came days after the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Paul, voted 8-5 to refer Fauci for contempt of Congress after he repeatedly refused to answer questions during a hostile Senate hearing last week about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right 111 times during his testimony before the committee, where Republicans slammed his response to the pandemic and blamed him for the public's declining trust in the American healthcare system.

A palliative care unit in Nottingham has unveiled a new entrance for families and patients.
Hayward House, which is based at Nottingham City Hospital, raised more than £1.5m after a fundraising campaign was launched by Nottingham Hospitals Charity in 2022.
Some of the money raised was used to enhance the unit's garden to make it more accessible, and further work has been completed on the main entrance and reception area.
The new entrance was officially opened on Wednesday by the Swift family, whose annual Nuthall Christmas lights raised more than £179,000 for Hayward House over 22 years.
Wendy Swift, 59, said the family was delighted to support the centre, which looked after her father 22 years ago.
