NEW YORK (AP) — A former cargo ship captain pleaded guilty on Wednesday to drugging and raping a 21-year-old U.S. Merchant Marine Academy cadet who was working on the vessel as part of the academy's Sea Year training program.
John Merrone, 53, pleaded guilty just as his trial was about to start in Brooklyn federal court. He admitted that he had ******* ual intercourse with the cadet without her consent "on the ship, in the middle of the ocean" after knocking her out with an intoxicant in 2019.
A jury had been picked and the woman, identified only as Jane Doe, was in the courthouse waiting to testify. Prosecutors were also planning to call as witnesses several other women who have accused Merrone of ******* ual ******* aults over the last three decades.
The ******* ociated Press generally does not name people who say they have been ******* ually ******* aulted, unless they agree to be identified.
Merrone was previously convicted of false imprisonment and battery after a Florida Keys waitress accused him of having ******* with her against her will, but an appeals court overturned the verdict and prosecutors didn't retry the case.

WASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. cyber defense agency CISA is using Anthropic's AI model Mythos to audit government software, three people familiar with the matter said on Monday, another sign of government enthusiasm for adopting the AI startup's tools even as the company navigates an ongoing standoff with the White House.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is using Mythos to scan government code repositories for bugs that could leave the door open for foreign spies and cybercriminals, the sources said.
Anthropic did not respond to questions about the initiative. A CISA representative said last month that he would check to see if there was anything to share about the matter but did not respond to further emails.
The scanning is being done by CISA's Attack Surface Evaluation team, according to one of the sources. The team is a group within CISA that conducts digital security ***** sments and hacking exercises across government.

Democratic Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (Va.) on Sunday criticized President Trump for canceling the signing of a bipartisan housing bill.
"I don't know with this president, because he's said that he doesn't care about rising costs," Subramanyam told host Chris Stirewalt on NewsNation's "The Hill Sunday," regarding whether he expects Trump to sign the bill this upcoming week.
"He said … if he doesn't have a housing problem and his friends don't have [a] problem with housing, then it doesn't matter to him," the Virginia Democrat added. "So, I actually wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't sign it."
Trump canceled the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act on Wednesday, despite the legislation gaining passage through both chambers of Congress via overwhelming, veto-proof majorities.
The president said he will not sign the housing bill until the Senate passes the House-approved Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act — which proposes requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
