SAN FRANCISCO – The final contest of the Detroit Tigers' nine game West Coast trip had a bit of everything:
A few errors, a clutch double-play, a couple runs in extra innings, which included a pinch-hit flare from Hao-Yu-Lee on the go-ahead run, who might have been the hero on so many other nights, and maybe he was here, too; oh, and a pitcher's duel – let's not forget about that.
But, really, this was about the bullpen, the much-maligned – for good reason – unit that's blown more leads than any other team in baseball.
Well, not at Oracle Park on Sunday, Aug. 9, not this time. All the bullpen did was pitch almost four scoreless innings and give the offense a chance to win it in extra innings, 3-1.
The win gives the Tigers seven straight road series wins, a franchise record, and gives them a 7-2 record for the road trip. They are now two games below .500 and come home for two big series against Cleveland and Chicago.
