The winter solstice is upon us, marking the shortest day and longest night of the year.
People across the country have already faced multiple blankets of white snow where they live, but the winter solstice marks the first official day of winter.
The solstice also marks the start of the Pagan holiday, Yule, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. The holiday is thought to celebrate the sun's return and the land's rebirth as days begin to get longer after the longest night of the year.
The solstice is celebrated by many as a time of rebirth and change. Many cultures throughout human history ha

A photo of Miss Finland sparks racist accusations and furor across Asia

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) — Finland’s government is facing heavy pressure and accusations of racism from several Asian countries after its representative to the 2025 Miss Universe pageant was seen pulling the corners of her eyes in a photo -- and some Finnish politicians posted their own photos repeating the gesture.
Sarah Dzafce lost her Miss Finland crown last week after a photo of Dzafce pulling the skin at the corners of her eyes posted on social media went viral late last month. The photo, and its caption reading “ea

In 2026, Americans will get free admission to national parks on President Donald Trump's birthday but no longer on Juneteenth and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, according to the National Park Service website.
Previously, the National Park Service included these two federal holidays among its free-entry days for around 100 park sites.

In recent remarks at the “Revitalizing America’s Markets” event, SEC Chair Paul Atkins laid out a plan that would fundamentally redefine what it means to be a public company in the United States. He framed it as a plan to “make IPOs great again,” but beneath the rhetoric lies something far more consequential: a shift toward a marketplace where public companies behave like private ones — shielded from disclosure, insulated from shareholder input, and increasingly detached from the long-term health of the broader economy. In essence, it is a move toward absolute control by CEOs and their boards

Grand Jury declines 2nd attempt to indict Letitia James

A federal grand jury on Dec. 4 rejected an attempt to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James, a key target of President Donald Trump's ire, less than two weeks after a judge threw out the Trump administration's first indictment against her.
The grand jury’s rejection of charges marks the Justice Department’s second attempt at indicting the New York attorney general whom the president has railed against in recent weeks. James brought a lawsuit against Trump in 2022.
In a statement, James slammed the attempted indictment, calli

Earlier this week, Robert Griffin III, a former NFL quarterback from 2012 to 2020 (Redskins, Browns and Ravens), posted on X about why BYU had earned its place in the College Football Playoff. Punctuating his remarks, he said at the end: “Stop the persecution of the Christians, man ... come on!”
His commentary became a social media magnet for naysayers ready to recap their theological reasons for objecting to the label. But Robert Griffin III (often called RG3 for short), has heard this pushback before.

But this next clip may just be the biggest in terms of strange phenomena, outside the realm of surfing, as ca

Some 80 million years ago, an earthquake seemed to have sent a flock of frightened sea turtles scrambling across the seafloor.
Traces of this prehistoric panic were stumbled upon by a group of free climbers in 2019 on a steep slope overlooking the Adriatic Sea, which the public is typically prohibited from accessing due to rockfalls. They noticed a chunk of rock covered with marks that looked like footprints and snapped some photos. One of the climbers later showed these to Paolo Sandroni, a geologist (and fellow free climber) at the Marche region’s Multi-Risk Functional Center in Italy.

President Donald Trump announced a major reset of federal fuel economy standards on Wednesday, rolling back Biden-era regulations that would have pushed automakers toward electric vehicles.
The move will save American families an average of $1,000 per new car purchase, the White House said. The policy reversal represents Trump’s latest effort to combat what he calls “hidden cost-of-living increases” from the previous administration. His reset of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards marks a significant victory for traditional automakers struggling to meet aggressive EV targets.

Trump's transit chief says dressing better will improve air travel. Experts howl.

Apparently nostalgic for the Champagne, pillbox hats and soft-lit glamour that characterized the skies in the 1950s and ’60s, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy urged airline passengers to dress nicely and mind their manners ahead of the year’s busiest travel week.
“Are you dressing with respect?” he asked in an online video. “Are you saying please and thank you?”
Doing so, Duffy suggested, would help to usher in a new “golden age of travel” — a phrase that harks back to the mid-20th century flight

The human brain is not a hard-wired machine but a malleable organ that is regularly re-shaping itself.
Neuroscientists at the University of Cambridge in the UK and the University of Pittsburgh in the US have now identified four major turning points in brain wiring between birth and death.
Like chapters of our lives, each of these neurological 'epochs' marks a new era of development or decline.
"Looking back, many of us feel our lives have been characterized by different phases," says senior author and neuroinformaticist Duncan Astle from Cambridge.
