A terrible gaffe just reminded a number of New York fans of a blunder by one of their own last year.
The US Men's National Team is out of the World Cup, and it happened in embarassing fashion. After a strong run in the tournament saw Mauricio Pochettino's squad reach the Round of 16, Belgium sent the Stars and Stripes home with an emphatic and decisive 4-1 win on Monday night in Seattle.
And the disappointing and mistake-filled performance by the homestanding Americans was wrapped up in one single gaffe that ultimately put the US out of the game early in the second half.
Goalkeeper Matt Freese left the box to try to cut off a deep ball and Belgium run. He played the ball and got just past the Belgium player. However, he kicked the ground while trying to reach the ball, coming well short of it.
Predictably, Belgium regained control and sent a long shot past Freese and defender Tim Ream into the goal for an embarrassing and avoidable score and a backbreaking 3-1 lead.
